5:30 pm: The people present: the fate of the city
January 7, 2021 –
Join a broad coalition of organizations to discuss the real state of the city of Eugene as our community wrestles with the chaos of COVID-19, the ongoing housing crisis, climate breakdown, and racist policing, among other issues. Hear from the people on the ground fighting for justice in the face of some of the most trying times that Eugene has ever witnessed.6:30 pm: NAC: Radical thought reading group
January 7, 2021 –
This ten-week reading group will explore some key texts in radical thought, including texts by Marx, the early anarchists, feminist theorists, and scholars of contemporary radical movements. The reading schedule for the group mirrors the syllabus for PS 433 Marx and Radical Thought at the University of Oregon. Because PS 433 has a limited class size – and UO tuition is prohibitively expensive – I wanted to create a more informal space for people to engage with this material outside of university limitations. All the readings will be available for download as PDFs via this Google drive link.
Feel free to show up every week or only the weeks that interest you. That being said, I do encourage you to come to the first week’s meeting so that we can get a feel for what people want to get out of the group. Feel free to email me with any questions!

7:30 pm: Speak Up for a Fossil Free Future!
January 11, 2021 –
OnlineEugene’s franchise agreement with NW Natural is up for negotiation, and City Council needs to hear your input! Join us in speaking up at the next City Council meeting. There will be time available for public comment (2.5 minutes per person). Sign up to make a public comment by raising your hand in the meeting between 7:15-7:35. See link at the end for talking points!***
Eugene’s City Council, Mayor, and City Manager have considered numerous options in negotiating a new franchise agreement with NW Natural, including no new “natural” fracked gas infrastructure in our city. After two six-month extensions, and now with a third extension approved which ends in May of 2021, no agreement has been reached.
NW Natural is trying to force the city to agree to their self serving demands, which include unlimited expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure in our city and charging customers to fund emissions reductions, while not contributing anything themselves. If the city agrees to this, it will be impossible for the city to meet the climate goals laid out in the CRO — especially considering the fact that the current Climate Action Plan (adopted July 2020) already leaves a 40% gap to meeting CRO goals. We need to phase out fossil fuel infrastructure. There is no climate justice and no livable future for any of us without an urgent path off of fossil fuel energy sources. The first step in this process is to stop expanding use of fossil fuels. Eugenians have spent years demanding that the city address this by halting the expansion of fracked gas infrastructure in Eugene, and the City Council is starting to listen.Join us in calling on our city leaders to stand up to corporate greed and fight for our community, instead of ceding to the demands of companies that only have their own short term financial interests in mind. We need a just transition off of fossil fuel energy in order to meet our community’s emissions reductions targets, and we need it now!You can find more info and talking points here: https://350eugene.org/fossil-free-eugene/ -

10:00 am: NAC & LCMA: Against Punishment, unit 1 of 4 -exploring different forms of justice
January 30, 2021 –
We are thrilled to share with you an invitation to Against Punishment, a training resource created by Project Nia and Interrupting Criminalization. This abolitionist curriculum is anchored in the principle that "punishment actually undermines safety." The first of a four-part series, the unit "Exploring Different Forms of Justice" will guide us through conversations on punitive, restorative and transformative justice, and exercises in interrupting harm as we encounter it in our community and daily life.
We hope that you will share this invitation widely, and join us on Saturday, January 30, 2021, 10am - 12:15pm PST, to explore these ideas together.
Future units (dates TBD) include: Crafting Non-Punitive Responses to Harm; Another World Is Possible, Abolition through Storytelling; Surviving Harm/Violence & What Would Justice Look Like?
